New - Meet the travelers on a package holiday with a difference
Scalpel Safari - 10th December 2002
Four Nervous travelers get ready to jet off on safari to South Africa, but it's not a close encounter with a lion that's scaring them - its one with a knife. They planning to bring home some unusual souvenirs of their African adventure - a new nose, a new face, new boobs and a new bum !
Steven Mulholland, Muriel Lipton, Lisa Gregory and Kelly Williams have all been tempted by this holiday with a difference. Cosmetic surgery in South Africa is about a third cheaper than in the UK and, after the ops, they can recuperate at a top class hotel and see the country's stunning wildlife.
This week's documentary on five, Scalpel Safari, follows the quartet's operations, and reveals the mixed results.
Kelly 22 admits her catchphrase is , Does my bum look big in this?" Her twin sister is getting married and she's determined to fit into her bridesmaid's dress. She's pinning all her hopes on a £ 1 700 Liposuction op.
Muriel is 64 and. After a recent divorce, is feeling in need of a new look to help her find a man. She's splashing out one facelift. " I don't want to spend the rest of my life as a lonely spinster," she says Lisa, 27 , is a successful; businesswoman whose line of work had had one drawback, As the owner of Sheffield's first lap-dancing club, she's surrounded by busy beauties and reckons that her boyish figure could do with a boost.
Finally Steven, He is a single 38- year old who reckons his "boxer's" nose is deterring the ladies, who mark him down as a thug. As they all sit down to dinner on the first night of their 'holiday' no one has much of an appetite. They'll all be meeting their surgeon in the morning....
Squeamish viewers may not want to watch what comes next, specially when Kelly has four liters of fat sucked out of her bum, and Muriel's face is cut, stretched and stapled back into position,
But at least there's plenty to take the patients minds off their pain. Chilling in the sun by the pool helps them relax, and the ostriches, deer and rhino they encounter on safari don't bat an eyelid at their bandages and dark glasses.
Best of all, as far as 'very sore' Kelly is concerned, the safari Jeep has nice, soft seats, 'So comfy, my bum doesn't hurt at all, she says. But not all of them are happy campers after those bandages come off. Will Kelly fit into her dress ? Will Lisa be proud to parade alongside her pole dancers ? And will anyone even recognize Muriel when she gets off the plane ?
